Absolutely! This training works for anyone and everyone. The beauty of training functional movements is that they are natural movements for everyone and can be scaled to individual abilities.
Many people have lost their ability to perform these natural movements effectively and that is the cause of many of their physical pains and difficulties. Training and developing these movements will correct those physical imbalances and the result will be a stronger, more functionally sound body.
Humans were designed to run, lift, throw, climb, squat, jump, etc. A sedentary lifestyle is what’s responsible for physical deterioration. Many people try to combat this problem by performing exercises with the goal of building bigger muscles or losing weight. They sit on a machine or hold a weight and work the individual muscles separately hoping to make them stronger and leaner. The problem with this approach is that our bodies were meant to be used as a complete unit, not as individual muscles.
Real life physical challenges require that we use our whole body. If we train our muscles to work individually, two things happen. First, our muscles do not learn how to work together and lack coordination. This also causes loss of potential overall strength, power and performance. Second, people tend to focus on specific muscles and almost neglect other muscles. They tend to work on their “favorite” exercises. This leads to an imbalance in muscular strength and elasticity. In both cases, the end result is the potential for injury and constant physical pain.
The key is to “Train Movements, Not Muscles”! The beauty of this approach is the development of functional physical strength (strength that will be useful in everyday physical challenges). As a side benefit bodies get leaner and muscles get bigger. However, it is not bulky “body builder” muscle, but rather athletic muscle.
